L-CARN ITINE

L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative that plays a key role in energy metabolism, particularly fat metabolism. Unlike the peptides you’ve been asking about, it’s a well-established, legal, over-the-counter supplement with a solid base of research behind it.

What it is

L-Carnitine is synthesized in the body (mainly in the liver and kidneys) from two amino acids, lysine and methionine. It’s also obtained through diet, primarily from red meat and dairy.

How it works

Its main job is transporting fatty acids into the mitochondria, the part of the cell where they’re burned for energy (beta-oxidation). Without adequate carnitine, long-chain fatty acids can’t efficiently enter the mitochondria to be converted into usable energy.

Common forms

  • L-Carnitine: The base form, most commonly used
  • Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR): Crosses the blood-brain barrier more easily, often marketed for cognitive support
  • Propionyl-L-Carnitine: More associated with cardiovascular/circulation research
  • L-Carnitine L-Tartrate: Common form in sports supplements, studied for exercise recovery

Claimed/studied uses

  • Exercise performance & recovery: Some evidence for reduced muscle soreness and improved recovery; evidence for direct fat-burning/weight-loss effects is weaker than marketing often suggests
  • Heart health: Used clinically in some cases (e.g., certain cardiac conditions, carnitine deficiency syndromes)
  • Cognitive function: ALCAR specifically has been studied for mild cognitive decline and neuropathy
  • Carnitine deficiency: Legitimate medical use for primary or secondary carnitine deficiency, sometimes prescribed (e.g., Carnitor)

Safety

Generally well-tolerated. Common side effects at high doses include nausea, stomach upset, and a fishy body odor (from a metabolite called TMAO). It’s widely available without a prescription in most countries.
